Setting Up Your Apple iPhone with WSU Outlook Live Email

You can use your Apple iPhone to access your WSU Outlook Live email, calendar, and contacts.

There are two ways you can connect to your account on your Apple iPhone. The preferred method is to set up a Microsoft Exchange connection.  If you want to access your email, calendar, and contacts on your Apple iPhone, you'll need to set up an Exchange connection. If you already have a Microsoft Exchange connection, which is unlikely, you can select Other to set up a POP or IMAP account. If you only want to access your email messages you may use either type of account.

Preferred and Most Common Procedure to Set Up Exchange ActiveSync on an AT&T Apple iPhone:

  1. If this is the first email account on your iPhone, tap Mail. Otherwise, tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account.
  2. Tap Microsoft Exchange.
  3. Tap in the Email box and enter your full email address (for example, joe.coug@email.wsu.edu).
  4. Tap in the Username box and enter your full email address again.
  5. Tap in the Password box and enter your password.
  6. Optionally, tap in the Description box and enter a short description for the account.
  7. Tap Next on the upper right corner of the screen.
  8. Tap in the Server box and enter m.outlook.com.
  9. Tap Next.
  10. Choose the type of information you want to synchronize. By default, Mail, Calendar, and Contacts are all turned on. To turn off synchronization for a type of information, tap and slide the switch to OFF.
  11. Tap Save.
  12. If you're prompted to create a new pass code, tap Continue and enter a numeric pass code. You'll need to enter the pass code twice.

If you tap Close, you’ll need to configure your pass code in the iPhone Settings application before you can view your account information on your iPhone. If you are prompted to create a pass code and don't create one, you won't be able to send and receive email.

Alternative Set Up Procedure for POP or IMAP

Before you get started you will want to find your Outgoing SMTP Server Host Name.  To do this, sign in to your account at the following address: https://pod51000.outlook.com/owa/. After you sign in successfully, the address you entered will resolve to an address that contains the SMTP server name you need to use.

For example, if the address resolves to https://pod51000.outlook.com/owa, you will use pod51000.outlook.com for your Outgoing SMTP Server Host Name.  This host name will not be the same for everyone so this is an import step in the process.

  1. If this is the first email account on your iPhone, tap Mail. Otherwise, tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account.
  2. Tap Other.
  3. Tap Add Mail Account
  4. Tap in the Name box and enter your full name.
  5. Tap in the Address box and enter your full email address (for example, joe.coug@email.wsu.edu).
  6. Tap in the Password box and enter your password.
  7. Tap Save.
  8. Tap either IMAP or POP.
  9. Under Incoming Mail Server Host Name, enter either outlook.com for IMAP or outlook.com for POP.
  10. Enter your user name (for example, joe.coug@email.wsu.edu) and your password.
  11. Under Outgoing Mail Server Host Name, enter the SMTP server name you determined earlier.
  12. Enter your user name (for example, joe.coug@email.wsu.edu) and password.
  13. Tap Save.

Note:

  • If you receive the following certification error:  ‘The certificate from “email.wsu.edu” for account “joe.coug@email.wsu.edu” could not beverified.’  Simply accept this and the setup will continue successfully.
